POET CAMP Book Club

Poet Camp Book Club

A progressive and generative book club! Each quarter we’ll read a different book together.

Here’s how each round will go:

MONTH 1
(JULY)

Read!

Book club book is announced! Joy! Excitement! Those who sign up will receive a set of questions that we’ll use to frame our thinking the rest of the time we spend with this book.

MONTH 2
(AUGUST)

Write!

We’ll read! We’ll ponder! We’ll post favorite quotes in a book club members only Poet Camp page. Sarah will send a few prompts inspired by this book to encourage you to generate work inspired by our reading.

MONTH 3
(SEPTEMBER)

Share!

We’ll gather together on Zoom for an evening of sharing our thoughts about the book, and a read-around of poems inspired by the book we’ve read.

Our next Book Club book is…

Few writers have the ability to make my heart break and sing with joy and gratitude in the space of a brief essay. Ross Gay’s Inciting Joy is the perfect summer read, finding so much delight in the broken and beautiful world we share. You’ll be so glad to have read this book, which encourages warm community and loving listening from its first word to its last.

Read more about this book here.

I highly recommend the audiobook to this, which is an award winner in its own right!

TEACHERS! Inciting Joy is soul food especially for educators. Not only does it help us build and notice resilient joy in our personal and professional lives (the opposite of toxic positivity!), it encourages us to center joy in our classrooms. I promise this isn’t a typical “professional development” required read. It’s a really wonderful book, literally wonder-full. I know it’ll bolster you as you return to the trenches in the fall. And I think you’ll want to talk about it! Because of this, I’d love to offer anyone who’s a teacher in any capacity to join our book club at a reduced rate – $15 for the discussion questions, prompts & two live meetings (full price is $25). Because the school year starts before our typical discussion day, I’m scheduling a second discussion date in late August, separate from the read-around for anyone who’d like to share what they wrote while reading, which will happen in September.

*IF YOU ARE AN EDUCATOR, PLEASE USE THIS LINK TO REGISTER INSTEAD OF THE BUTTON BELOW!

Please consider joining us! I’d be so grateful if you’d share this with anyone you think might be interested.
